The European Union should be indivisible when it comes to the US restrictions on the export of AI chips, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has said.
“In this respect, my answer is very simple. I think that the European Union should be indivisible as we are countries that share the same principles, are firmly in favour of sanctions against Russia, against their circumvention,” the president told reporters on Thursday.
“The US has us as a really reliable friend who wants to strengthen its security but also wants technological innovations, and in this sense, the US support is extremely important for us,” he added.
In his words, consultations with the US on the chip export restrictions will continue.
“I very much hope that these decisions are not final and that these decisions will change in our favour,” Nausėda said.
On Monday, the US administration announced its decision to place export controls on AI chips, which will now apply to most countries in the world. The 18 US partners and allied countries exempted from the sanctions do not include Lithuania.
However, the Lithuanian companies said that the export ban would not affect them.
