The object discovered a year ago during the Baltic seabed survey for Lithuania’s planned wind farm is indeed a sunken ship, additional surveys have confirmed, according to the developer Ignitis Renewables.
Dainius Stepanonis, Ignitis Renewables project manager in charge of marine research, says the discovered ship has no significant historical value and will not interfere with the wind farm project development.
Additional surveys were carried out using a remotely operated underwater vehicle in order to identify the found object, Ignitis Renewables said. Preliminary data shows that the size and proportions of the vessel are similar to the trawler-type vessels that have been built in Lithuania and other Baltic countries since the 1960s.

Trawlers were mainly used for fishing, but they were also used as the basis for research, hydrographic, civil, and military vessels. Trawlers have also been used for exploration activities.
In December 2023, Ignitis Renewables reported the discovery of a vessel 70 meters long and about 6 meters high on the seabed at a depth of 38 meters.
