Lithuanian psychiatrist ‘treating homosexuals’ keeps his licence

In interviews with the media, Aleksandas Alekseičikas-Kirinovas claimed he had “treated homosexuals” during the Soviet occupation and has continued to do so after Lithuania’s independence. A medical commission found he had breached ethics, but stopped short of recommending harsher penalties.

On Friday, the Lithuanian Bioethics Committee stated that the doctor violated ethical principles with his statements about the LGBTQ+ community. The committee recommended that the doctor avoids discriminatory statements in the future.

The Vilnius City Mental Health Centre, his employer, previously said in a statement that the statements reflect the doctor’s opinion and have nothing to do with the institution.

The Lithuanian Bioethics Committee contacted the doctor in July to seek a "full assessment of the situation" and asked him to clarify his statements. Alekseičikas-Kirinovas claimed his words had been misinterpreted.
