The Lithuanian parliament, Seimas, plans to have permanent representatives in Ukraine and Germany.
The Board of the Seimas approved the creation of the new posts last week.
The Lithuanian parliament’s permanent representative in Ukraine could assume the new position from next September, while the one in Germany could be appointed once funding is made available.
The proposal to have representatives in these two countries was made by the Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs. The committee believes that these officials are needed in view of the geopolitical situation, the need to fully support Ukraine on its Euro-Atlantic integration path and the importance of the German parliament.
The Office of the Seimas estimates that it would cost 134,000 a year to maintain a representative in Germany next year, and 126,000 euros to maintain the country’s representative in Ukraine. Due to the lack of funds, it has been decided to first move with the position in Ukraine.
Currently, the Seimas has permanent representatives in the United States and the European Union. Their task is to help strengthen and develop cooperation between the Seimas and the host parliament, to keep the Seimas informed about its activities.
