Education Minister Radvilė Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė has been named the interim chairwoman of the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) after Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis announced he was stepping down from the party leadership. The TS-LKD will elect its new chair in January.
“The leadership’s formal handover has taken place. From today, Radvilė Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė will lead the party until a new party leader is elected,” Landsbergis, who stepped down as the party’s chair earlier in the day, said after the party’s presidium meeting.
According to Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė, the party will approve the procedure within a week, and the party’s branches will propose nominations in early November.
“And then the canvassing period will follow, and the election should take place in the first weeks of January, and the party’s convention will take place in February,” she said.
