Lithuanian government allocates almost €9m for Ukrainian refugees

BNS 2024.08.05 14:10

The Lithuanian government last week allocated almost 9 million euros to help Ukrainian refugees in Lithuania.

The cabinet allocated 8.7 million euros of the funds borrowed on behalf of the state to the Ministry of Social Security and Labour to help the Ukrainians, and almost 10,000 euros was allocated to the Health Ministry.

The money will be used for child benefits, social assistance for schoolchildren, social payouts, to partially cover heating and water costs, for housing rental support, etc.

The Social Security and Labour Ministry told BNS that Lithuania has allocated over 114 million euros from the state budget to help Ukrainian people in Lithuania.

Lithuania spent 34.5 million euros on such assistance in 2022.

According to the central Bank of Lithuania, Ukrainian refugees generated around 1 percent of the country’s GDP last year, and Ukrainians who had taken refuge in Lithuania paid almost 60 million euros in taxes into the Lithuanian budget until March 2023.

In terms of its aid as a share of GDP, Lithuania remains one of Ukraine’s biggest supporters since the start of Russia’s large-scale military invasion more than two years ago.
