A video of Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda greeting a scandalous Belarusian vlogger called Mellstroy has started spreading on social media.
The president was asked to send the greetings to Mellstroy by a boy, who called the Belarusian vlogger his “friend”.
The video, which was filmed during the commemoration of March 11, the day of the restoration of Independence of Lithuania, was first shared by journalist and public figure Andrius Tapinas.
“There is a Belarusian vlogger called Mellstroy. He’s rubbish. He used to stream, and people would pay money to see his friends fight, do drugs, or pee on each other. He was busted for beating up a girl on one of his podcasts, then got in trouble for pornography. He has been banned by YouTube and Twitch for advertising online casinos,” Tapinas wrote.
“And when he announced that he would pay 2 million dollars to whoever would organise a presidential greeting for him, I immediately had a feeling that it would be our president to fall for it,” he said.
The President’s Office told LRT.lt that Nausėda always informally interacts with people and children during public events.
“Despite the fact that a child who approached the president yesterday in Independence Square concealed the purpose of his request, the president will continue to make selfies with children and adults who ask for it,” the statement said.
“The president takes this opportunity to call on young people to distinguish between good and evil on social media, and on parents to talk to their children about the dangers of harmful content on social media and to teach them to be aware of it,” it added.
