A Lithuanian citizen fighting on the Russian side was killed in Ukraine, TV3 television reported on Thursday.
This was confirmed by the sister of the deceased, Vitaliy Nikonov.
“On January 11, I received a call from Vitaliy’s friend, who lives in Russia, who told me that Vitaliy had been killed,” she told the TV channel.
According to TV3, Nikonov grew up in Tytuvėnai, a town in the western District of Kelmė, but left Lithuania last year to stay with relatives in Sevastopol in the Crimean peninsula that was annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014. Nikonov later joined the Russian forces fighting in Ukraine. He was killed in mid-December in the town of Marinka, near Donetsk.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has no information about the deceased.
