Lithuania’s main cities to continue tradition of fireworks-free New Year

BNS 2023.12.29 15:22

Lithuania’s three major cities are going to celebrate the New Year without fireworks, replacing them with laser shows and concerts.

In Vilnius, the New Year celebrations will take place in Cathedral Square, starting at 22:00, the municipality said on Friday.

The fireworks will be replaced by a light and laser show in and around the square, and free public transport will run until dawn.

To see off the old and welcome the new year, the Cathedral’s bell tower will be illuminated with video projections created specifically for this occasion.

Kaunas and Klaipėda are planning similar New Year celebrations. There will also be a laser and light show in these cities, and silent pyrotechnics will be used in Kaunas.

The Lithuanian parliament, Seimas, is currently discussing stricter restrictions on the sale and use of fireworks.

The aim is to reduce the negative impact of pyrotechnics not only on the environment but also on animals and people’s physical and mental health.
