Two two-year-old square-lipped male rhinoceros arrived at the Lithuanian Zoo in Kaunas on Thursday night.
The two rhinos came from zoos in the Netherlands and Germany where they were born. The zoos contribute to the European population management program of breeding the square-lipped rhinos within the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria.
The square-lipped rhinoceros are considered critically endangered and possibly extinct in the wild. A group of five currently live on the vast East African savannah of Burgers’ Safari.
The Lithuanian Zoo has been closed for renovation for two years and will reopen to visitors on November 13.
