Fewer Belarusians, Ukrainians enrol in Lithuanian universities

Fewer Belarusians and Ukrainians have chosen to study at Lithuanian higher education institutions this year, the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport has reported. 

According to the preliminary data, the number of Belarusians and Ukrainians enrolled in higher education institutions this year is 114 and 465 respectively, compared to 574 and 1,330 respectively last year.

The most popular study programmes chosen by Belarusians this year are World Politics and Economics, High-Tech Business, and Psychology.

Meanwhile, most Ukrainians chose to study International Business, Maritime Management, General Nursing, International Marketing, Information Systems and Cyber Security, as well as Software Systems.

According to the Migration Department, as of September 1 this year, 85,579 Ukrainians and 60,220 Belarusian citizens live in Lithuania. Almost 83,300 Ukrainians have temporary residence permits in Lithuania, while more than 2,000 have permanent residence permits, foreigner’s passports, and other documents.

The number of Ukrainians recognised as war refugees in Lithuania is 49,970. More than 33,000 Ukrainians who are not war refugees came to the country for other reasons, including employment and family reunification when one of the citizens is a member of the European Union.

At the same time, 56,562 Belarusians have temporary residence permits in Lithuania, most of them on the basis of employment.

The data shows that the number of Ukrainians in Lithuania has decreased by more than 9,000 since January, while the number of Belarusians has increased by about 11,500.
