Poland is sending a contingent of special forces to Lithuania to protect NATO’s summit in Vilnius in mid-July, the country’s National Security Bureau said on Thursday.
The bureau said in a tweet that the decision was endorsed by Polish President Andrzej Duda, and the country’s prime minister and defence minister.
The deployment of the forces is in line with agreements between the Polish and Lithuanian presidents on broader military cooperation, it said.
President Gitanas Nausėda said in early June that Poland was proposing to Lithuania to step up military cooperation and that he had received a call from his Polish counterpart “with a very interesting proposal”.
On Thursday, Germany also deployed Patriot long-range air defence system in Vilnius in preparation for the NATO summit.
Vilnius will host the NATO summit on July 11-12.
