A permit has been granted for the construction of a national stadium in Vilnius’ Šeškinė area, according to the information system Infostatyba.

The permit for the 15,900 square meter multifunctional complex was issued on Tuesday, it shows. Construction works are expected to start in June and be completed by 2025.

Under the 160-million-euro agreement signed in October by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport, Vilnius Municipality, and the concessionaire Vilniaus Daugiafunkcis Kompleksas, a 15,000-seat football stadium with a multifunctional sports complex that meets UEFA standards will be constructed in Vilnius.

The complex will also house a sports museum, a culture centre, an athletics and sports centre, and a kindergarten. The complex will be surrounded by a park that will cost over EUR 2 million to plant.

The initial stadium construction in Vilnius’ Šeškinė started in 1987, and the foundations and supporting structures were mothballed in 1993. Following a further investment of 33.6 million euros in 2008, construction works were then halted due to a lack of funding.
