Party membership in Lithuania continues to decline, the latest figures from the Justice Ministry have shown.
On March 2, 2023, twenty-three political parties had 97,177 members, and 32 political committees had 2,800 members.
The number of committee members was declared for the first time.
Total party membership has reached one of the lowest levels since 2014, when political parties were obliged to report these figures to the Justice Ministry twice a year.
A lower level was only recorded in 2020, when the country’s parties declared 95,800 members.
The Lithuanian Social Democratic Party remains the largest party with 14,344 members, followed by the conservative Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats in second place with 12,623 members. The Labour Party with 9,640 members is in third place.
According to the ministry’s data, the Register of Legal Entities has initiated the liquidation of the Russian Alliance after the party failed to report its membership for the third consecutive time.
Three more parties – the Party of Political Prisoners, the National Unity Union, and the Order and Justice party – are being liquidated at their own initiative.
Political committees and parties are required to submit their membership lists to the Justice Ministry twice a year. If a political organisation fails to report the number of its members, the Justice Ministry notifies the Register of Legal Entities, which initiates the liquidation of the political organisation.
A person can only be a member of one political committee or a party.
