Former President Valdas Adamkus has contracted the coronavirus and will miss Wednesday’s event where he is to be declared an honorary citizen of Vilnius.
The diagnosis has been confirmed by Adamkus’ spokeswoman Božena Bagonaitienė.
She said the president was being treated at home and the illness was confirmed by a test on Wednesday.
The former president was scheduled to be made an honorary citizen of Vilnius at a gala event at the city hall, a decision taken by the city council in early February.
The ceremony was then postponed until the end of September to coincide with an important date for the city, September 28 is the day of Grand Duke Gediminas, the founder of Vilnius.
Adamkus, 95, served as Lithuania’s president from 1998-2003 and 2004-2009.
