A body of a teenage girl was discovered on Monday night in Šiauliai, Lithuania’s fourth biggest town in the north of the country.
The victim, born in 2006, was discovered at 21:54 with a wound in the head. The body was wrapped in a carpet, according to witnesses.
Four suspects were taken into custody: three men – born in 2004, 1999, and 2001 – and a woman born in 2007. The female suspect is currently 14, at which age she can be tried for murder.
Ramūnas Matonis, spokesman for the Police Department, told LRT RADIO that the circumstances of the crime are being clarified.
The suspects were detained immediately after the body was discovered, according to Matonis, and the police are looking into several versions of what happened. No further details can be discussed at the moment, he added.
The incident was reported to the police by local residents who noticed a bloody carpet left in a meadow near a garbage container.
According to witnesses who were near the scene when the police arrived, they saw a body wrapped in a blanket being unwrapped from an old carpet.
“I’ve only seen images like this in crime films, where a corpse wrapped in a carpet is taken out and thrown into a rubbish bin,” one witness said. “Even from a distance, I could clearly see the heavy blood marks. The body looks small: that of a child, a teenager or a woman.”
