‘We must be careful when considering involvement in Ukraine war’ – president

NATO and Western countries have to be very careful when considering direct involvement in the war in Ukraine, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has said.

His comments came in response to discussions on the establishment of a no-fly zone over Ukraine amid Russia’s ongoing military aggression.

“This is a good declaration, but how to implement this declaration practically? If Russian planes violate this no-fly zone, what will be the instructions on the ground?” Nausėda said in an interview with Bloomberg on Friday.

“This is the reason why we have to assist the Ukrainians with modern air defence systems, but we have to be very careful when considering whether to step into the conflict. I’m talking about NATO and the Western world,” he added.

Ukrainian leaders have asked Western countries to ensure a no-fly zone over the war-ravaged country, but representatives of NATO countries have said that this would mean NATO's direct involvement in the ongoing war in Ukraine.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Friday after a meeting with NATO foreign ministers that the Alliance would not impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine.
