China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi hinted that Lithuania should follow the path of Nicaragua, which “gained a new friend in the world” after reversing its earlier policy on Taiwan.

In an interview with Global Times, the mouthpiece of the Chinese Communist Party, the minister said “Nicaragua resumed diplomatic relations with China and returned to the right track of the One China principle”.

He responded to a question that drew parallels between Nicaragua and Lithuania.

Earlier this month, Nicaragua broke off relations with Taiwan and took over its embassy, saying it would hand the building over to China. Nicaragua had first established diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1990.

Meanwhile, Lithuania has been embroiled in a diplomatic dispute with China over the opening of a “Taiwanese” representation in Vilnius. Beijing has now downgraded the status of Lithuania’s embassy to the level of chargé d'affaires and has taken coercive economic measures.
