One in 13 people in Lithuania experience severe material deprivation

The level of severe material deprivation stood at 7.7 percent last year, down by 1.7 percentage points from 2019.

Some 215,000 people experienced severe material deprivation last year as they faced at least four out of six material deprivation elements due to a lack of financial means, Statistics Lithuania said on Friday.

The deprivation index considers a household's ability to pay the bills, rent and mortgage, afford heating expenses, spend holidays away from home, eat nutritious meals, cover unforeseen expenses, and have a car.

Some 7.2 percent of people living in cities and 8.8 percent in rural areas experienced severe material deprivation last year.

The rate for cities went down by 2.5 percentage points, and the latter increased by 0.1 percentage point.

In terms of age, those aged 65 and above were more exposed to deprivation, compared to people aged 25–49.

Meanwhile, childless households experienced severe material deprivation more often than families with children.
