On Thursday, Lithuanian Parliamentary National Security and Defence Committee suggested that Russian troopers could have landed on the Lithuanian coast during a military exercise.

The landing of Russian military unit during the exercises could have taken place near the Lithuanian sea resort Juodkrantė in the Curonian Spit, according to parliamentarians from the Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Defence.

Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius implied to the media that he knows about the incident, and assured that all services responded properly. However, State Border Guard officers did not register any violation of the border, though one of their outposts is located nearby Juodkrantė.

After Crimea annexation, Lithuania created a special rapid reaction force that would as first react to any military aggression, while Ministry of Defence says the forces in question had not been launched.

In a recently published report on national security State Security Department and Military Intelligence outlines the probability of Russian provocations nearby the Lithuanian border. Apart from possible threats, it contains indications that the Russian military units, in peace time, carry out the penetration into foreign countries.

ALGIRDAS BUTKEVIČIUS, Prime Minister:

It is a classified information and I cannot comment on it. Our services responded in a timely (journalists ask if properly?) and appropriate manner. That is for sure.

RENATAS POŽĖLA, General, Chief of State Border Guard Service:

There is an idea in the public that it could have happened, but we have no record of any such case. Talking about the sea border we now modernize the system, and we definitely need to embrace new technologies in order to guarantee more effective security.

RASA JUKNEVIČIENĖ, member of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Defence:

Russia while conducting its military exercises in the Baltic Sea and our region, unfortunately does try such things. It seems that, based on unconfirmed data, these actions had place in Lithuania as well. Take a look at the map. Curonian Spit is just a strip of land that has only a few policemen. This territory together with Klaipėda is one of most sensitive zones, and as the report shows, Russia very actively exercises in landing their troops.

JUOZAS OLEKAS, Minister of Defence:

The first in border protection are border officers, and then we have a number of instruments and plans how other services and forces should react.
