A major increase in the flow of passenger vehicles has been recorded on the Lithuanian-Polish border as the controls were lifted on Saturday.

“The movement started yesterday [Saturday] afternoon and has risen several times. There’s a constant movement of passenger cars,” Giedrius Misutis of the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service told BNS on Sunday.

There has been a tenfold increase in the cross-border movement of passenger vehicles, compared to the situation when border controls were in place.

No incidents at the border have been recorded so far, Misutis said.

Lithuania and Poland agreed to open their border on Friday. It was closed in the middle of March to stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

To mark the lifting of border controls, Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis and his Polish counterpart Mateusz Morawiecki met at the Kalvarija border checkpoint on Friday.
