The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry has advised Lithuanian citizens against traveling to Iraq amid heightened tensions after the killing of a top Iranian general in Baghdad.

In its updated recommendations to Lithuanian travelers, the ministry warned that “a further escalation of events is possible” in the wake of the killing of Qasem Soleimani.

People already in Iraq are advised to take special precautions, avoid mass gatherings, and follow media reports and other information.

The Foreign Ministry had previously advised Lithuanian citizens not to go to certain parts of Iraq.

The ministry is also considering updating its recommendations to travelers to Iran, Rasa Jakilaitienė, the foreign minister's spokeswoman, told BNS.

There are currently around 50 Lithuanian citizens in Iraq and Iran, she said.

Soleimani, the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps' Quds Force, and Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis were killed in a US drone strike on Baghdad international airport last Friday.

Iran has wowed to retaliate for the strike, and Iraq's parliament has demanded the withdrawal of foreign troops from the country.
