They have been together for 52 years. Vitalius and Albinas introduce themselves as father and son, but in fact, they are partners.
In Soviet times, when the two men first met, admitting that you were a homosexual was extremely dangerous: it was considered an illness and a crime. Vitalius got used to lying about it to protect himself and his lover.
It’s been more than three decades since Lithuania regained independence, but the couple still don't feel safe coming out and are still waiting for the legal recognition of same-sex union in the country. Lithuania remains among only three member states of the European Union where same-sex partnerships are still not recognized.
As they grow old and Albinas’ memory slowly fades, Vitalius is tired of hiding and decides to tell their life story publicly for the first time.
This is one of very few occasions when the public hears from older members of the Lithuanian LGBTQ+ community.
