Lithuania will ask Belarus to let stranded trucks return home – PM

BNS 2025.11.05 14:28

Lithuania will request that Belarus allow about 5,000 Lithuanian trucks and semi-trailers stranded in the country to return home, Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė said Wednesday.

Haulers have urged the government to act urgently after Lithuania closed its last two border checkpoints with Belarus last week for a month.

“I have not heard any ultimatum from haulers, at least none was expressed. But a meeting with transport organisations was held at the Interior Ministry yesterday, and today it was decided that Lithuania will contact Belarus to arrange for Lithuanian trucks to return home,” Ruginienė told reporters after a cabinet meeting.

She added that discussions are already underway, but the border will remain closed.

“The process is already underway, discussions are taking place, so we will see what the outcome will be. We will do everything possible to bring Lithuanian trucks back home,” Ruginienė said.

The national road carriers association Linava appealed to the prime minister on Tuesday to urgently resolve the situation, warning of the logistical impact on Lithuania’s trade.
