Summer in Lithuania was coolest since 2017 – but unexceptional in long perspective

This summer was Lithuania’s coolest since 2017, with average temperatures below the long-term norm, the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service reported Tuesday.

Measured against summers since 1961, this year ranked 33rd by temperature, making it a “median summer”. Its average temperature matched those of 1964, 1966 and 1968.

It was also the first summer since 2017 without a recorded heatwave, defined as three consecutive days with highs above 30 degrees Celsius.

Unlike this year’s spring, which saw notable temperature anomalies, the summer showed little deviation from the norm.

Meteorologists noted that every month of the season had fewer sunshine hours than average.

Rainfall was significantly higher: Lithuania recorded an average of 275.6 millimetres of precipitation over the season, about 20% more than the long-term average of 229 millimetres.
