Lithuania intends to join Finland’s initiative to develop a network of shelters in Ukraine, said President Gitanas Nausėda.
“Lithuania welcomes and fully supports Finland’s initiative to lead the Shelter Coalition for Ukraine and we are ready to join,” the Lithuanian leader said at a joint press conference with his Finnish counterpart in Helsinki on Tuesday. “In turn, Lithuania invites Finland to join our flagship initiative to build new schools across Ukraine.”
In May, Ukraine and Finland announced an international coalition to strengthen civil defence, which aims to expand the network of shelters in the war-torn country.
The initiative aims to build shelters, share experience in this area between countries, and develop tools to finance the installation of shelters.
Lithuania has been one of the first countries to launch Ukraine’s reconstruction projects without waiting for the war to end.
In October, the government approved guidelines for Lithuania’s involvement in Ukraine’s reconstruction and recovery for 2024–2027, which provide for support for the construction of schools and shelters, the purchase of demining equipment, assistance with European integration, and strengthening the resilience of its energy sector.
