Baltic post company Omniva halts shipments to US over unclear customs rules

Estonian-owned postal and logistics company Omniva said Tuesday it has temporarily suspended parcel shipments to the United States due to new customs duties.

The suspension means customers cannot currently send goods, products, gifts or similar items to the US through Omniva. Letters and documents can still be mailed, said Sven Kukemelk, the company’s acting head of commerce.

The decision follows recent changes to US tariffs and customs procedures, Kukemelk said. The United States has adjusted its de minimis threshold – the value under which goods are exempt from duties and other fees – and introduced new customs requirements that remain unclear.

As a result, Omniva cannot guarantee delivery of parcels to customers, Kukemelk said.

He added that the company has “done everything possible” to continue service but must wait for clearer cooperation from US authorities.

“We will resume shipments to the United States as soon as we can again guarantee reliable delivery that meets regulatory requirements,” Kukemelk said.
