Lithuania’s border guard service is urging travellers heading to Poland this weekend to use the Lazdijai crossing point instead of Kalvarija, citing potential congestion due to increased truck traffic and tightened border checks.
In a statement issued Friday, the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) said that all freight traffic is currently being redirected through Kalvarija, which may result in longer wait times and heavier vehicle flows at that checkpoint.
Polish authorities have stepped up border checks with Lithuania as of July 7 in response to a surge in so-called secondary migration. This refers to migrants who initially crossed into the European Union via Belarus or Latvia and then attempted to move onward through Lithuania into Poland and further into Western Europe.
With cross-border traffic increasing during the summer months – particularly on weekends – officials warned that traffic jams are likely at the Lithuania-Poland border.
To ease pressure and improve travel conditions, VSAT recommends that private car travellers consider less congested routes and plan ahead.
