Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has appointed diplomat Gediminas Varvuolis as the country’s new ambassador to the United States.
According to the presidential decree, Varvuolis will begin his duties in Washington on August 1.
He is currently serving as ambassador-at-large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, focusing on connectivity and the Three Seas Initiative.
A career diplomat, Varvuolis has previously served as Lithuania’s ambassador to Belgium and Japan, and as deputy head of the country’s Permanent Representation to NATO. He speaks English and French.

Varvuolis studied at Vilnius University’s Faculty of History and later at the Paris Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po).
In Lithuania, ambassadors are nominated by the government, approved by the Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs, and formally appointed by the president once the receiving country grants an agrément.
Varvuolis will replace Audra Plepytė, who is due to leave her post in Washington on July 14.
