More than half of the people in Lithuania would be willing to contribute to the armed resistance in the event of aggression against the country, a survey initiated by the Defence Ministry has shown.
According to the survey, 90 percent of respondents are in favour of Lithuania’s NATO membership, more than half (52 percent) would be willing to defend their country with arms in the event of aggression against Lithuania, and 61 percent would contribute to unarmed resistance.
Of those surveyed, 75 percent believe that NATO allies would defend Lithuania in the event of military aggression and 89 percent support the presence of allies on Lithuanian territory. Moreover, 75 percent support Lithuanian troops’ deployment in international operations if requested by NATO allies.
Eighty-five percent of respondents support the deployment of the German brigade in Lithuania and a similar percentage agree that the presence of allies in Lithuania deters hostile military action.
The majority (67 percent) of Lithuanians would also support the deployment of Lithuanian military instructors to Ukraine if requested by Kyiv. Of those surveyed, 71 percent also support Lithuania’s provision of military assistance to Ukraine.
More than half of respondents (66 percent) also support universal conscription and are increasingly in favour of young people being called up for military service as soon as they leave school.
The survey was carried out by Spinter Tyrimai in December 2024, polling Lithuanian citizens aged 18–75.
