The number of deaths in Lithuania in 2023 was the lowest since 2010, the latest figures from the country’s Institute of Hygiene showed on Monday.
A total of 37,005 people died in Lithuania in 2023.
“This is the lowest annual number of deaths since 2010. In comparison, in 2022, 42,884 people died in Lithuania,” the institute said.
The number of deaths from malignant tumours has dropped to 7,784 in 2023, from 8,110 in 2010.
The number of deaths from cardiovascular diseases has also decreased to 19,263, from 23,627.
However, the number of deaths due to mental and behavioural disorders and diseases of the nervous system increased over the same period.
According to the Institute of Hygiene, there were four main causes of death in the country in 2023 and they accounted for 84.4 percent of all deaths: 52.1 percent of deaths were due to cardiovascular diseases, 21 percent due to malignant tumours 6.1 percent due to external causes of death, and 5.2 percent due to digestive system diseases.
