Lithuanian police open probe over recording device found at Social Democrats meeting

Lithuanian police have launched a pre-trial investigation into the illegal gathering of information after a pen with a hidden recording device was discovered during a meeting of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party council.

The Social Democratic Party (LSDP) claims LRT reporter Eglė Samoškaitė dropped the pen inside the hall where the meeting was being held.

The device was then handed over to the Dignitary Protection Service officers present at the venue, as the meeting was attended by Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė and Speaker of the Seimas Juozas Olekas.

LRT administration maintains that its journalists committed no illegal or unethical acts. Samoškaitė has rejected the allegations, saying she is frequently targeted by Social Democrat suspicions.

LRT also announced that the journalist will temporarily refrain from reporting on Social Democrat-related topics and will step down from hosting the Dienos Tema programme.
