Ukrainian ambassador vows to build partnership with Lithuania’s new government

Ukraine hopes that Lithuania’s new government will not change the country’s stance towards Ukraine and that Kyiv will work closely with the future government, Ukrainian Ambassador to Lithuania Petro Beshta says.

“We will build this partnership with the new coalition and with the new Seimas [parliament]. We hope that support to Ukraine will not decrease and that we will be able to build a very practical cooperation on all important tracks,” he told BNS on Tuesday. “We hope that will not change the position of Lithuania.”

Kyiv is waiting for the formation of the new cabinet in Lithuania, Beshta noted: “We will work with every minister and ministry that is involved in implementing the victory plan and the Peace Formula.”

“That would mean building a strong eastern flank of NATO, which will protect Lithuania and the whole of Europe from Russia and which would deter the Russian’s aggression against Europe in the future. These are the key points that we’re hoping to develop cooperation on with the new Lithuanian government and the Seimas,” Beshta said.

“Fighting Russian aggression and making Ukraine stronger and our partners stronger and preventing Europe from experiencing such a tragedy, as Ukraine is experiencing today, is the focus of our foreign policy today,” the ambassador pointed out.

According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, Lithuania is one of Ukraine’s most generous supporters and has contributed more than 1.6 percent of its GDP to Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion, ranking third in the world.

On Monday, the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, the Dawn of the Nemunas party and the Democrats “For Lithuania” signed their coalition agreement. They pledged to fully support Ukraine in its “path towards victory and reconstruction”.
