Lithuania will not create an army division by 2030 under the current conditions and resources of the defence industry, the presidential chief security adviser says after the State Defence Council (VGT) meeting on Tuesday.

“It has been stated that our national [army] division will not be able to reach its full operational capability in 2030 if the conditions remain unchanged,” Kęstutis Budrys, President Gitanas Nausęda’s chief national security adviser, told reporters after the Council’s meeting.

“If these conditions remain unchanged, we will only be able to do that in 2036–2040,” he added.

According to Budrys, these timeframes are unsatisfactory, therefore the VGT asked the chief of defence to submit proposals on the necessary structural changes in the Armed Forces, on the financing needs and adjustments to the concept of the national armed defence.
