Four hundred Lithuanian troops will ensure security during the Three Seas Initiative (3SI) summit and business forum in Vilnius on Thursday, the armed forces have announced.
Troops and military equipment are stationed in and around the city from Monday.
According to the military, Air Defence Battalion troops will be using public roads between April 8–12 but will be carrying out most of their operations away from busy areas. NASAMS medium-range air defence systems will also be deployed during the event, the armed forces said.
The Three Seas Initiative brings together 13 EU member countries located between the Baltic, Black, and Adriatic Seas. These include Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Greece.
The US, Germany and the European Commission are the strategic partners of this initiative, and Japan is expected to join the initiative as a new strategic partner during the meeting in Lithuania.
This initiative aims to foster the accelerated development and convergence of the region by increasing the connectivity of the participating countries in the areas of transport, energy and digitalisation, in particular in the North-South axis, and to strengthen EU cohesion and transatlantic EU-US relations. The initiative also involves Ukraine and Moldova as associated states.
