On Sunday, two children, aged 1 and 2, were reported drowned, and their mother was rescued alive from the Neris River in Vilnius.
According to the Police Department, on Sunday, at around 11:06, a woman behaving inappropriately and a drowning girl were spotted in the Neris River near Verkių Street in Vilnius. The girl died after being resuscitated by paramedics, and the mother was pulled alive from the water.
The mother, aged 35, was in shock and said that her second child was also in the river. Firefighters recovered the body of the second child at around 12:20.
According to initial information, the mother was trying to drown herself and the girls, Ramūnas Matonis, spokesperson of the Police Department, told the news website lrytas.lt.
A pre-trial investigation has been opened for murder.
The suspect is an employee of the Personnel Administration Division of the Police Department and has been on maternity leave since January 2021.
