The Lithuanian State Border Guard Service’s (VSAT’s) Boomeranger 1100 high-speed boat on Friday is leaving for Joint Operation Themis 2023 in the Mediterranean Sea.

The Lithuanian border guards will patrol off Italy’s coast as part of the operation against irregular migration, VSAT has said in a press release.

Organised by the EU’s border and coast guard agency Frontex, the international multifunctional operation aims to help Italy monitor its borders in the central Mediterranean, fight irregular migration, and prevent members of criminal groups and people linked to terrorism from entering the EU.

Twenty-four VSAT officers will take part in the operation from May 17, divided into four shifts for a period of almost six months.

The Lithuanian border guards and their boat will be based on the island of Sicily.

Their main tasks will be surveillance of the state border at sea, control of irregular migration, search and rescue operations, prevention of environmental pollution, and control of fishing rules.
