Belarus to create a new paramilitary force

On Monday, Belarus’ authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko said the country will create a new territorial paramilitary force.

According to the AP news agency, Lukashenko said Belarus needed the force “in case of aggression”. He has routinely and without basis accused Ukraine, as well as Poland and Lithuania, of preparing so-called provocations.

Belarusian Defence Minister Viktor Khrenin claimed the force will number 150,000 volunteers.

Russia maintains a significant presence in Belarus, which has grown following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Kremlin has used Belarus as a launching pad for the assault on northern Ukraine, as well as for the continuing missile attacks against the country.
