Vilnius is officially recalling Eitvydas Bajarūnas as its ambassador to Russia under a draft government resolution registered on Thursday.
Bajarūnas is set to leave the position as of June 1.
Moreover, the Lithuanian government plans to liquidate its Consulate General in Saint Petersburg as of June 7. It was closed by Moscow following Lithuania’s decision to expel the head of the Russian Embassy in Vilnius, Alexey Isakov, and the staff of the Russian Consulate General in Klaipėda from Lithuania.
In response to the massacre in the Kyiv suburb of Bucha, the Lithuanian government decided in early April to downgrade diplomatic representation between Lithuania and Russia to the level of chargés d’affaires, ordered the Moscow’s ambassador to leave the country and closed Russia’s consulate in Klaipėda.
