Lithuania has no red lines when it comes to sanctions on Russia – minister

Lithuania has no “red lines” when it comes to sanctioning Russia after it started a war against Ukraine, Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis has said.

On Tuesday, he met with his Dutch counterpart Wopke Hoekstra in Vilnius.

“Lithuania has no red lines when it comes to sanctions. That means we are ready to discuss anything that is on the table currently, including energy,” Landsbergis said, adding that it would be best to start from an embargo of Russian oil, since it provides major budget revenue for the country.

According to the Dutch minister, the EU has to make a united decision on renouncing Russian energy resources.

“Some of [the EU countries] are much more dependent on Russian oil and gas than the Netherlands, so whatever we do, we should be able to do it in a united way,” Hoekstra said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier called on the West to boycott Russian oil and gas, but Western countries are not yet in agreement on this.

This issue is particularly sensitive for Germany as it is heavily dependent on Russian gas.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin said a ban on Russian oil imports would have “catastrophic consequences” for the West.
