Heavy snow and mass crashes cause chaos on Lithuanian roads

LRT.lt, BNS 2022.01.21 14:49

Difficult weather conditions have caused mass crashes on Lithuanian roads on Friday

Traffic has been paralysed on Via Baltica’s 55th kilometre from Marijampolė, Lithuania’s southern city, to the Polish border.

Road workers cannot clear roads on this section of the road due to traffic jams, Ieva Šilvinskienė, spokeswoman for Marijampolė police, told BNS. The situation has forced Lithuania and Poland to stop truck movements across the border.

According to Šilvinskienė, the situation was further complicated after some drivers tried to bypass traffic jams and formed artificial “third” lanes that blocked workers from accessing parts of the road that needed to be cleared.

“This situation will definitely last at least several hours,” Šilvinskienė said.

Lithuania’s Fire and Rescue Department said it has also received several reports of vehicles skidding off roads.

On Friday morning, a bus veered off the road in the western Lithuanian Kelmė district and another one in Panevėžys district. No people were injured in these incidents.

Reports of cars, buses, and trucks crashing or skidding off roads across Lithuania kept coming throughout the day.
