Lithuania to gift training plane to Ukraine

Lithuania plans to hand an Albatros L-39ZA light ground attack plane used as a jet trainer to Ukraine.

Under the plans by the Ministry of Defence, the plane will be handed over to the Ukrainian army free of charge as the aircraft was deemed unsuitable for further use by Lithuania's chief of defence.

Major Gintautas Ciunis of the Lithuanian army told BNS Lithuania's second Albatros jet trainer would be handed over to Ukraine. The first one collided with the French army's Mirage 2000 during a military exercise in August 2011, fell into a swamp and was not suitable for further use.

The second Albatros has not been used since 2019 due to an engine problem.

The Lithuanian army used the two Albatros planes to train military officers in charge of air police functions.
