A Lithuanian pilot was killed on Sunday when a self-built historic plane replica crashed in Latvia.

Another man on the plane was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

The killed pilot is Arvydas Šabrinskas, the owner of the plane, according to the news agency BNS. The injured passenger is Valdas Černius.

The plane was a self-built replica of the late 1920s Anbo II single-engine monoplane, developed in Lithuania.

According to the Latvian public broadcaster LSM, the Lithuanian plane had stopped at Priekuļi airfield, just outside Cēsis, to refuel, en route to its destination in Biržai, northern Lithuania.

After refueling, it attempted to take-off, but crashed following engine failure a little before 13:30 on Sunday.

Latvian police are investigating the crash, according to BNS.

The plane was built by a group of enthusiasts several years ago and financed by Šabrinskas.

The military trainer aircraft Anbo II was designed by the aviation engineer Antanas Gustaitis in the 1920s. He designed nine Anbo planes that were used in aviation training and reconnaissance operations.

Anbo stands for “Antanas nori būti ore”, which means “Antanas wants to be in the air”.
