Over a ton of drugs seized in Lithuania during major international operation

More than 30 Lithuanians linked to criminal groups have been detained as part of an international operation, the police announced on Tuesday.

Some 1.3 tons of drugs, valued at around 9 million euros, have been seized in Lithuania alone, according to Rolandas Kiškis from the country’s Criminal Police Bureau.

"The Lithuanians organised drug trafficking on a very large scale from Spain to Scandinavian countries and the UK, and also from the Netherlands to Scandinavia and the UK," Kiškis told reporters, adding that some of the detainees belong to Lithuanian and foreign criminal groups.

The seized narcotics include 574 kilograms of hashish, 641 kilograms of cannabis, 77 kilograms of cocaine and 40 kilograms of amphetamine-type stimulants were detained during the operation.

Fifteen Lithuanian nationals were detained in the country and are facing up to 15 years in prison.

A total of around 700 searches, including 30 in Lithuania, were carried out as part of the international operation and around 800 suspects were detained.

The seized amount of drugs during the international operation includes over 8 tons of cocaine, 22 tons of hashish and cannabis, two tons of amphetamine, six tons of drug precursors, 250 weapons and over 39 million euro worth of money in various currencies.
