Lithuania to beef up ‘economic diplomacy’, boost presence in Taiwan, South Korea – minister

Lithuania needs to strengthen its economic diplomacy effort and expand the network of foreign representations, the country's Economy Minister Aušrinė Armonaitė says.

The ministry is ready to boost its presence in the United States, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, as well as in Europe – in Germany or Denmark, the minister said.

“It has not always been a priority, but we need to be visible. Exports are our economic engine, and we believe we could have more representations, networks,” Armonaitė said during the Lithuanian Business Forum on Wednesday.

In her words, the country needs to make use of the global network of Lithuanians for the country to be visible in larger markets with more possibilities.

“We need to make use of success stories we have created in Lithuania to attract more of them. We will expand our global presence and we need not 13 representations, we need to double the number, and we should probably expand even more in the future,” Armonaitė said.

Currently, Lithuania has commerce attaché positions in 13 diplomatic representations: the UK, Sweden, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Norway, Belarus, the Netherlands, France, Israel, the United States, Finland and the common diplomatic representation for China, South Korea, Mongolia and Vietnam.
