Lithuanian man rescued after 14 hours at sea without raft or life vest

A Lithuanian man has been rescued after falling overboard a freight ship and spending 14 hours drifting in the Pacific Ocean.

On February 16, a 52-year-old Lithuanian seafarer fell overboard at 04:00 before being rescued at 18:00, the French Polynesia Rescue Coordination Centre informed the Lithuanian embassy.

The man is a chief engineer aboard the freighter Silver Supporter, registered in Gibraltar. The crew reported the man missing on February 16 after he failed to show up for breakfast and he could not be located on the ship.

The French Navy was also informed about the missing person.

Thomas Domenichini, the coordinator of the rescue effort, told AFP news wire that the man made a final entry into the mechanical diary at 02:00 before disappearing.

According to the rescuers, the man was lucky to be found before nightfall. He is reportedly feeling well and the ship is continuing on its journey to the Pitcairn Islands.
