Three chief advisers to the Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda are stepping down, the presidential office said on Thursday.

Vytautas Žukas, the former chief of Lithuania’s armed forces, has resigned from his position as the chief adviser on national security. He plans to engage in private activities, according to the presidential office.

Sonata Šulcė, who led the president’s advisers on education, science and culture, will continue working in creative and scientific fields.

Aistis Zabarauskas, head of the president’s communication group, will resume work in the private sector.

All three advisers have been part of the team since the beginning of Nausėda's term, and Zabarauskas was also in charge of communication during Nausėda's election campaign.

"I am truly grateful to my advisers for their contribution to the shaping of the president's policies during the first year,” the president said in a statement.

“My trust in and respect for these people does not end with their last day in office but are joined by human gratitude,” he said. "The started work will be continued and expanded by new group leaders with their initiatives"

As of July 15, defence adviser Darius Kuliesius will head the national security group. Jolanta Karpaviciene will replace Sulce.

A new head of the Communication Group will be announced in July.
