Lithuanian Border Guard Service (VSAT) announced they have detained one of their colleagues for smuggling cigarettes near the Belarusian border.
A Toyota Avensis driven by a non-uniformed border guard was stopped by Varėna border guards after they received a tip-off.
During the search, 1,400 packs of Belarusian cigarettes were found stashed in various places inside the car.
The border guard-turned-smuggler is facing a fine between 5,200 to 6,000 euros, and also losing his job. A court may also sanction seizure of the vehicle used for smuggling.
The border guard, who has served for five years, was released after questioning and an internal investigation has been launched by the VSAT,
