The Defence Ministry on Monday is unveiling plans to establish 44 cybersecurity operations centres across the country as part of a broad effort to strengthen Lithuania’s digital defences.
Rokas Jonikas, director of the Cybersecurity Operations Department at the National Cyber Security Centre (NKSC), said in May that the goal is to create regional centres in every county within three and a half years.
Earlier this year, municipalities in the Šiauliai region reached an agreement with the NKSC to set up a joint regional security operations centre, the first of its kind in Lithuania. According to the Šiauliai municipality, the centre could begin operating by the end of this year under “an optimistic scenario”.
The centre is expected to employ four specialists who would provide cybersecurity services to seven municipalities.
Under the plan, the NKSC will supply hardware and software, train personnel and support the management of major cyber incidents. The participating municipalities will provide facilities and cover staffing costs.
Officials say the centre will help build and maintain the public sector’s cybersecurity capabilities, including detecting, logging and responding to cyber incidents, as well as identifying vulnerabilities and strengthening weak points.
