Lithuania won’t send extra assistance to Latvia amid migration increase

Lithuania will not send border guards to assist Latvia amid intensified irregular migration from Belarus.

“Right now, we have no plans to send Lithuanian border guards to Latvia to protect the country’s border,” Giedrius Mišutis, spokesman for the State Border Guard Service (VSAT), told BNS on Tuesday.

Mindaugas Bajarūnas of the Interior Ministry told BNS that Lithuania cooperates closely with Latvia in the field of secondary migration aimed at preventing irregular migrants from entering the EU.

“Currently, we have a state-level emergency situation at the Lithuanian border. The VSAT forces are mobilised to the maximum to protect the border of the Republic of Lithuania. The Lithuanian military has also been involved amid the recent increase in the flow of illegal migration,” he said.

On Monday, Estonia announced its decision to send assistance to Latvia.
